Soccer player David Beckham who might be known as the world’s most famous athlete alongside Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods announced a few days ago that he has accepted a $250 million deal with the LA Galaxy of the MLS.
With “Becks” as he often called coming to the US, one might think soccer will be revived in the US and that David Beckham can do for soccer what MJ did for basketball or what Tiger did for golf, but let me flat out say that will never happen. Soccer just doesn’t have the appeal that other sports do and has never been a high enough scoring game for U.S. fans. How fun is it to watch a bunch of guys run around a much too large field for 90 minutes and then end up in a 0-0 tie? Boring!!!
You also don’t need to go much farther than hockey to see my point. How many times has the NHL changed the rules to encourage more scoring and just look at the lack of interest now in hockey… their on the “cycling network” (OLN) for god’s sake.
My point is… David Beckham will be nothing more than a novelty act here in the U.S. Most U.S. citizens don’t know much about him except that he’s married to “Posh Spice” and once had a movie named after him. Other than that we simply get the occasional Sports Center highlight, but that’s about it.
I think he will be similar to Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise etc… with mostly the paparazzi interested in his personal life with very little being written or shown about his soccer abilities. Then again, I think that’s what he wants. Why else would you leave Britain where you’re a King, Real Madrid where you’re an icon and world figure to come to the U.S. who has notoriously hated soccer at the professional level?
Here’s video of David Beckham’s interview as he joined the LA Galaxy…
