I don’t watch much tennis anymore now that both Sampras and Agassi are both retired, but I decided to stay up late tonight and watch the Australian Open semifinal match between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. It wasn’t much of a match!
All I’ve heard about for the last few years on Sports Center is how dominating Federer is and although I’ve watched him dominate a handful of matches over the last few years I never really appreciated how good he really is.
This guy is the Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods of tennis. He was like a machine and never really looked like he even broke a sweat. To give you an idea of how calm and at ease he was… it was similar to Tom Brady. Have you ever noticed how Brady always looks relaxed and in control? How he just walks slowly up to the line and then executes the play to perfection, even if he’s behind and trying to score on a last minute drive. That’s how Federer looked. In total control of Roddick and pretty much every other player he faces. I believe he’s only lost a handful of matches over the last three years.
I grew up playing tennis, played my cousin (who was a top college player) many times and watched the likes of Becker, Conners, Sampras and Agassi and I’ve never seen a better or more dominating player in tennis or perhaps any sport for that matter.
All I can say is, it was simply amazing to watch.
Note: Federer defeats Roddick 6-4, 6-0, 6-2
