Apple, Inc. and At&t Wireless seem to be loosening their stance on what type of services they will offer with the Apple iPhone.
As we all know Cingular which is now the new At&t was chosen by Apple, Inc. to be the exclusive wireless provider for the new iPhone back in January when Steve Jobs announced the Apple iPhone during his keynote address.
Since then, many people have been wondering what type of service plan At&t will offer for the iPhone and most of us were under the impression that we would need to drop our current provider and sign up for a 2-year plan to get the iPhone at it’s current pricing of $499 for the 4GB model or $599 for the 8GB model, but in the last few days something at Apple and At&t must have changed.
As reported on MacNN today, Apple and At&t have decided to offer the iPhone not only with it’s 2-year service plan, but to also offer the iPhone as part of it’s pre-paid GoPhone service. Details haven’t yet been released, but should be expected on June 11th as that’s the day Steve Jobs will give his keynote address at WWDC.
Here is a quote from the article on MacNN…
“AT&T is also ready to offer the iPhone for pre-paid service, according to the source. Contact with the provider indicates that the phone could be purchased outright and could then be used with a SIM card enabled for pay-as-you-go. Renewing a contract near its end or signing up as a new subscriber would offer a significant drop in price — likely below the $499 official price currently announced, “Dan” said. Official pricing for the contract-free version wasn’t disclosed but is expected to be considerably higher than for subscriptions. The claim follows Apple’s recent decision to re-edit its ads to remove mention of requiring a two-year activation plan for service, and also follows after a potentially unrelated but significant move by AT&T to add data access to its pay-as-you-go service, which enables limited Internet access along with calling for those who rely on cellphones only infrequently.”
While pricing for the pre-paid service has yet to be announced or openly confirmed, the decision seems to make sense as many customers will be lured in to trying the iPhone now that they won’t have to be locked in to a 2 year contract with At&t.
With only 3 more days until pre-ordering of the Apple iPhone starts the buzz around this breakthrough mobile device is at an all-time high with investors making huge gains as Apple, Inc.’s (APPL) stock has gone from $88/share to $124.49 at market’s close today in just the last three months.
While I’ll have to wait until Monday to see all the pricing, I can assure you I’ll be at the front of the line to get this incredible device.
