I don't know. For me there just aren't enough wifi hotspots around. I need to have some cell service. But, what AT&T is doing is more akin to highway robbery than running a phone company. One of my friends showed me how to use Tmobile prepaid on my iPhone instead. Now, I got no contract and it only costs me $30 / mo.

Great idea Bryan !!! i looked into figuring sumthing out myself bc i use about the same amount of talk as u do. My solution i went with cost me $25 a month but i keep my same # but lose my data unless im around wifi. I got a gophone sim card from at&t and my plan cost me $26.25 a month for unlimited text and 250 minutes a month and the only downfall is when i need the net i need wifi but its always around. And again u have a genius idea also !!!!

Nice. Glad you found a solution that worked. I'll admit that while this did work for me for a while I did eventually decide that I needed to be connected for work purposes and when the iPhone became available on Verizon purchased it. So far I'm loving the service compared to AT&T's.

I will say that for a lot of people the solutions we both used are a great option. My brother is in a similar situation. He loves the iPhone, but doesn't want to pay the monthly fee for data so just uses an older iPhone with T-Mobile with no data plan and then just connects when he's on Wifi at work or at home and still has the phone part to make calls if he needs to.

Lots of solutions that will work for most people. Just have to get creative if you want to save money.

Feel free to post back here in a few months to let people know how it worked out for you.

It wasn't until later that I realized that the Skype/Gvoice combo could turn the device into a phone. That really got me excited since I don't make a lot of calls and my current $50/mo plan seemed excessive. Like you, I spend the majority of my time in places where I can get a wireless signal so this should work out great.

I found this post while I was looking for a way to make the skype app use the Galaxy's built-in ear speaker. Thats my only kink right now as I currently need to use earbuds to keep the device's mic from picking up the speakerphone audio. If I solve that problem I will be able to hold it to my ear like a regular cell.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing but using the Samsung Galaxy 5.0 media player. I'm going to port my current number to Gvoice so I don't have to change my # everywhere I've used it for the past 5 years.

My journey started with wanting to get a smartphone but not feeling that an extra 30/mo for a mandatory data plan was worth it. One day it occurred to me that the iTouch was functionally equivalent to the iPhone but without the cell part. That got me thinking and I went to Amazon to start figuring out prices. I saw an ad for the Galaxy 4.0 and it caught my attention. I'm not a big Apple fan so the ability to use an Android-based device was very appealing to me. I went to Best Buy that night and looked at the devices and ended up deciding to buy the 5.0 because having a 5" screen for an extra $40 seemed worth it to me.

Actually I mentioned the players quite a few times, being I am one myself.

I don't think it's the place of the government to worry the slightest bit about players whining cause they lost their social interaction. The site was breaking the law of every country in the world. They were using fake chips and calling them real money all while taking huge amounts for themselves.

There's politics at play here, but if what is alleged is true then no matter what Full Tilt was scamming players and that's not the US governments fault. While I do think poker should be legal online, there needs to be checks and balances in place to make sure things like this don't happen again. Then there'd be no reason for players to be out tons of money and an activity they enjoy.

I agree. If you have the money and want something professional, I'd always suggest getting something custom done. Typically automated tools do suck, but do offer the ability for people without the money to at least get something out there albeit usually not very appealing. I'd actually suggest people just make a mobile friendly version of their site until they have the money and can actually justify having an app professionally made. Many WordPress themes now come coded with responsive design. This makes them look great on any device and is much cheaper than a completely custom app. There's also a number of free or inexpensive plugins available.
