2016 has been the year of YouTube entertainment for me. I’ve seen my attention pulled farther and farther away from mainstream news and entertainment.
While live sports will always be at the top of my entertainment list… YouTubers have gained where traditional media has lost.
In a year where truth and facts sadly seem to matter less and less in the media and social media in particular my attention has wandered and with the quality being put out by YouTubers these days it’s no wonder that Madison Avenue and major brands have flocked towards YouTube and its stars to reach their millions of consumers.
Here are 5 of my current favorite YouTube channels along with one of my favorite episodes.
#5 – TheStradman
My friend Jonny’s insane Car Collection – TheStradman
This young guy (James) saved up and bought a 2006 Lambo and decided to document a regular guy owning a supercar. Not long after he got laid off from his job and decided YouTube was going to be his new career. James has a down to earth approach to life and his kindness to others and love for cars shines through in many of his channels episodes.
#4 – DetroitBORG
Apple iPhone 7 vs 7 Plus: Unboxing & Review (All Colors) – DetroitBORG
If I’m looking for in depth technical specs, unboxing’s and the nuts and bolts of a new product I’ll turn to DetroitBORG as his production quality, technical knowledge and in depth reviews are almost second to none. Another YouTuber to check out for technical reviews is Marques Brownlee who’s widely considered the most well known.
#3 – Flossy Carter
Google Home Voice Assistant Speaker – Flossy Carter
If I’m looking for a review, but care less about the tech specs and more about is the product a home run or is it shit I’ll turn to Flossy Carter who’s no nonsense approach to reviews and unboxing’s will have you not only entertained, but ready to pull out your credit card and start shopping. Hell I even catch myself watching videos on stuff I have absolutely no intention of purchasing just to see his take on it. Shout out to Xerxes 😉
#2 – Gary Vaynerchuk
INSIDE MY HEART, BRAIN, AND SOUL IN 13 MINUTES | DailyVee 101 – Gary Vaynerchuk
In the world of tech, Gary Vaynerchuk is a god. His online wine show (Wine Library TV) which turned him into a business author/speaker which then turned into early investments in companies like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Uber and SnapChat have catapulted him to not only the top of the tech world, but now mainstream America is taking notice. Now with his daily business documentary, DailyVee, Gary sets out to show the world what it takes to build a billion dollar legacy without the need to tear anyone else down in the process.
#1 – Jon Olsson
THE MALDIVES MAKES YOU SMILE! | VLOG 186 – Jon Olsson
What can I say about Jon Olsson’s channel? It’s second to none. While many claimed Casey Neistat’s channel was the #1 channel, Jon Olsson has raised that bar and not just a little. The production quality combined with his lifestyle, exotic travel, kindness to others, camaraderie with his friend/filmmaker Marcus and his incredible relationship with his longtime girlfriend Janni makes for one interesting and exciting adventure. Jon’s overall positive outlook on life and desire to succeed at no matter what he does creates a compelling look into the life of a former XGames athlete (skiing) and now successful businessman. This is my ‘Must See YouTube Channel of 2016‘.
Honorable Mention – subaruwrxfan
Review: 2015 Jaguar F-Type – subaruwrxfan
I was only planning to do 5, but then I remembered how I ended up watching many of these in the first place. I was looking to purchase a car and typed into YouTube car reviews and came across Matt Maranowski’s subaruwrxfan YouTube channel which I’ve come to love for Matt’s passion for cars and fun quirkiness. It then led me to Stradman’s and then to Jon Olsson’s and on and on. I’ll give YouTube credit as their algorithm for finding similar content you’ll like has definitely worked well for me.
